Description of the sailing trip

Athens

Ateny

Quite a big city, a little bit older than Gniezno. Athens had its heyday under the ruling of Pericles (443429 BC), and then it was just worse. A lot of monuments +newly brought ancient gravel on the ancient Acropolis, we will begin in the Marina Kalamaki

Corinthian Canal

The Canal connects the Saron Gulf with the Ionian Sea. Being too narrow for large units, it is now used mainly for tourism purposes. The construction process was very long, started by ancient Greeks in the VI century BC, later, in the first century AD they were helped by Neron, as Greece became a Roman Colony but they were building it even worse than we do with Polish Highways, because the canal was completed just in 1893.

Galaxidi

Small town on the way to the Ionian Islands. Nearby, there is a port, which in ancient times served as a haven for the nearby Delphi.

Zakynthos

One of the most beautiful islands in the archipelago of the Ionian Islands. It was ruled by Odysseus (at least Homer says so), later by Genoa, the Republic of Venice, also being part the Republic of Seven Islands – generally, a lots of history for its amateurs. We will drop by to the main city of the island with the same original name - Zakynthos

Kefalonia

It's the biggest island of the whole bunch of the Ionian Islands, so we will not cover it all. Like the most of the Ionian Islands, it belonged to the Romans (part of the province of Epirus – for history geeks), Venice and Turkey. We will do our best to see the coastal caves accessible only from the sea – we will go there by dinghies.

Ithaca

The mandatory stop during our trip – headquarters of the Odysseus’ faithful wife (he was rarely at home). Since the traces of Mycenaean culture were discovered, the island became a popular tourist destination.

Lefkas

Lefkas

The main town on the island of Lefkada. Legends say that the famous ancient poet, Sappho, jumped from the socalled White Rock there. She enjoyed a long flight down but, unfortunately, did not survived, as she hit the rocks instead of water. The town in the summer is vibrant with life; there are many cafeterias and restaurants.

Amfilochia

Port on Peloponesse, inside the Ambracian Gulf. Here, we plan to exchange crews, finish first stage and begin the second, which will be going the same way back to Athens.
